Eric's Party began in 1962 in the Night Shelter in Tara Street, Dublin. Named after Lion Eric Webb, who had the idea for the project and who ran it for many years. In it's first year 40 homeless people attended, in more recent times in excess of 500 people come to the party. In 1996 the venue was moved to the Irish Life Mall on Talbot Street in order to accommodate the rise in numbers and it is run with the full cooperation of the Gardaí at Store Street Station.
Guests for the party are invited from Day Centres run by religious, charitable and voluntary organisations who provide food and shelter on a daily basis for over 1,000 of our disadvantaged in this city. The profile of guest spans the homeless / sheltered / lonely / some suffer from mental illness and/or drug addiction. Others are just out of care or prison. The night commences at 6pm and comprises of a sit down hot
meal, a few words from our guest of honour and then drinks and
entertainment until 9pm. Each year a guest of honour is invited
to speak. For many years now President Mary McAleese has been
Guest of Honour. Historically there are 2-3 different musical
acts playing on the night (something for all ages). These have
included Aslan and Mary Coughlan.
