Working FLAT OUT with Threshold
Dublin Lions Club has recently agreed to provide via
Threshold, The National Housing Organisation, a food and
essentials pack to people who are leaving hostels and shelters
and moving to rented accommodation.
The following is taken from the
Threshold
web site.
A new partnership from November 2006 will see
Threshold's Access Housing Unit working 'flat out' with Dublin
Lions to help people make the move from homelessness to
independent living in Dublin. Threshold's Access Housing Unit
works to secure accommodation in the private rented sector for
people who are homeless - giving them a place to finally call
home. Since January 2003 the Unit has successfully sourced
accommodation for 310 adults and 161 children or 276 households.
Dublin Lions have generously agreed to sponsor the cost of
creating a special 'flat-out' kit for Threshold clients. The kit
will be available to clients who move out of homelessness and
into private rented accommodation.
The kit will consist of essential household groceries such as
milk, tea, bread, sugar as well as towels and toiletries and one
or two basic electrical items like a kettle or toaster.
Threshold staff will work with the client in creating a kit that
best suits their needs. While no money is given, the client is
saved the cost of purchasing such essential items in the early
and critical stages of their tenancy.
"The initial stages of taking up a tenancy are a critical time",
said Aine Daly, Manager of the Access Housing Unit. "When a
person moves from a hostel or emergency accommodation they
usually have very few possessions in terms of clothes, finance
or basic household goods. When you are on a low income and have
to face the high costs of starting a tenancy, the joy and
enthusiasm of moving into your new home can quickly disappear."
Threshold Director, Patrick Burke, said "Moving out of
homelessness is such a big step. We are delighted that Dublin
Lions is helping us to provide such a needed and practical
service to our clients."
